Prophecy resurfaces as wave of PDP defections to APC continues

A series of high-profile defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reignited interest in a 2020 prophecy by Nigerian cleric, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin.
The founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry had, during a televised message on 28 August 2020, predicted a political realignment in which key figures from the PDP would abandon the party in favour of the APC.
At the time, the prophecy was met with scepticism and debate, particularly among political observers and party loyalists.
Nearly five years later, the Nigerian political landscape appears to be shifting in a direction that mirrors the cleric’s earlier forecast. In recent months, several prominent members of the PDP — including former governors, lawmakers, and party stalwarts — have decamped to the APC, citing internal discord, ideological differences, and strategic interests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Analysts have described the current movement as one of the most significant political realignments in recent years.
“This is not the first time religious figures in Nigeria have made political predictions, but the accuracy of this particular prophecy is noteworthy,” said Dr. Hadiza Lawal of the Centre for Democratic Research.
While neither of the two major parties has officially responded to the renewed focus on the 2020 prophecy, the intersection of religion and politics in Nigeria has once again become a subject of public discussion.
The events have fueled debate about the influence of prophetic statements on political narratives, with some interpreting the developments as divinely ordained and others urging a more cautious approach.
As political momentum builds in the run-up to future elections, observers remain alert to whether additional aspects of Prophet Jeremiah’s prediction may yet unfold.
