The Sahara Group Foundation has expanded its circular economy initiative with the launch of its 14th Go-Recycling Hub in Navy Town, Ojo, Lagos, to further advance grassroots waste recovery efforts that have so far recorded over 367 tonnes of recyclable materials and payouts exceeding N43 million to residents.
The Foundation said that the initiative, implemented in collaboration with Wecyclers and Ibile Oil and Gas, was designed to promote responsible waste disposal, reduce pollution, and provide alternative income streams in participating communities.
The Board Chairman of the Foundation, Maj.-Gen. Emeka Onwuamaegbu (rtd), while speaking during the commissioning ceremony, said the hub would serve as a tool for behaviour change by encouraging residents to play active roles in environmental preservation while earning income.
He noted that it’s an opportunity for residents to play a key role in sustainability, “while making money in the process”
Also, Director of the Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the initiative reinforces the Foundation’s goal of building sustainable communities through grassroots engagement and strategic partnerships.
“With 14 hubs now operational, we are not just reducing waste; we are creating jobs, supporting livelihoods, and laying the foundation for a truly circular economy in Nigeria,” she said.
She added that the hubs had recorded over 367 tonnes of recyclable materials and facilitated payouts exceeding N43 million to beneficiaries, positively impacting more than 500 households, creating alternative income streams and improving livelihoods in participating communities.
Menakaya said that the hubs are located in Ijora, Ikorodu, Agege, Festac, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island, and Maryland, among others, with plans to expand into more communities within and outside Lagos State.
