The Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has approved the suspension of the paramount ruler of the cult-infested Swali community in Yenagoa Local Council, Wilcox Seiyefa Job, over the escalation of cult wars and robberies in his domain.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, follows the rise in cult-related killings, robberies, and thefts in Yenagoa and neighbouring communities, causing palpable tension and fear among residents.
Over the past month, there have been more than 25 cult-related killings, with over seven individuals losing their lives to unending cult wars and daylight and night robberies in the state.
According to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, the suspension of the traditional ruler was due to his inability to demonstrate the expected leadership in tackling crime and cultism, especially given credible intelligence linking two of his sons to cult activities in the community.
The statement directed the State Commissioner of Police to declare his two royal sons and all those involved in cultism in Swali as wanted. It further instructed the police to arrest all individuals involved in the insecurity in the state for investigation and prosecution.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has condemned the armed robbery attacks on a private radio station, Rhythm 94.7FM, Yenagoa.
According to the State Council, gunmen attacked the station on two separate days, Saturday, May 17, 2025, at about 2:10 p.m., and Sunday, May 18, 2025, at about 4:40 p.m. The attackers reportedly stole valuables, including mobile phones, recorders, and operational gadgets belonging to staff on duty.
