The police have unveiled a School Protection Squad in Benue State as part of efforts to strengthen the security of students and educational institutions across the region.
The initiative was launched on Friday during the formal commencement of the Safe School Initiative in Makurdi.
Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who was represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 4, Zacharia Achinyan, said the move reflects the Force’s resolve to safeguard the learning environment from emerging threats.
“Safe schools are places where a culture of safety for students, teachers, staff, and communities at large is assured,” Egbetokun said.
“Our schools are not only sanctuaries of knowledge but also nurturing grounds for the future leaders of our country; therefore, the security of our schools determines the security of our future.”
He directed the Commissioners of Police within the zone to initiate meetings with key stakeholders in their jurisdictions to strengthen school safety through collaboration and community engagement.
According to the IG, the Force will deploy modern technology and intelligence-led policing to ensure a consistent and proactive presence around school premises.
“I urge schools, parents, and communities to collaborate with law enforcement agencies as we champion the cause of safety and well-being for all our children,” he added.
“We must invest our efforts, resources, and hearts into fostering a culture of safety in our schools.”
Speaking at the event, Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, said the forum was themed “Strengthening Security Resilience and Integration of Host Communities,” and described it as timely, given the security issues currently facing the state.
“Benue State has many schools, and we must not allow criminally minded individuals to exploit any situation to harm our children,” he said. “Our children are our future and must be protected.”
