Jonathan signs two bills into law

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday signed two bills earlier passed by the National Assembly into law.

The bills, which became Acts, effective yesterday included the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 and the Immigration Act 2015.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, confirmed this to State House correspondents in a media chat at the Presidential Villa yesterday.

The Senate had on May 4 passed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 into law.

The Act seeks to prohibit female circumcision or genital mutilation, forceful ejection from home and harmful widowhood practices. Besides, it also prohibits abandonment of spouse, children and other dependents without sustenance, battery and harmful traditional practices.

Also, President Jonathan has approved the appointment of Professor Abdulrashid Garba as Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO).

A statement from the Federal Ministry of Education, signed by the Senior Special Assistant, Public Relations to the Minister, Malam Sule Ya’u Sule, has revealed.

The President also approved the appointment of Professor Monday Tommy Joshua and Professor Isma’il Junaid as Executive Secretaries of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and Nigeria Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) respectively.

Others are Professor Bashir Muhammad Fagge as Provost, Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, while Dr. Abubakar Abdul Dzukogi has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida.

According to the statement, the appointments take effect from May 21st, 2015.
