The Kwara State correspondent for the News Direct newspaper, Alhaji Saka Laro, has died.

He died on Tuesday night after a brief illness, and was buried at his Egbejila’s residence in Ilorin according to Islamic rites.

Consequently, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State council, in honour of the deceased, shifted its earlier scheduled Wednesday monthly congress to Thursday.

A statement by the council’s secretary, Mahmood Olayinka Alaya, described Baba Saka Laaro as “a committed member of the Correspondents’ Chapel.”

He added that: “In honour of his memory and contributions to the union and journalism in general, we are observing today (Wednesday) as a moment of reflection and mourning.”

Also, the Correspondents’ Chapel expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Laro.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Abdulhakeem Garba, and Secretary, Kayode Abdulazeez, the union expressed heartfelt condolences to the immediate family of the late journalist, the Daudu Agaka family, over the painful loss.

It described Laro as a “thoroughbred professional who distinguished himself with humility, professionalism, and admirable leadership qualities throughout his career.

“The chapel prays for the peaceful repose of our late colleague’s soul and urges his family to find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind as a calm, dedicated, and principled journalist whose contributions will not be forgotten.”

Members of the chapel said the deceased would be missed for his “high display of maturity and unmatched humility.”
