The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a commercial motorcyclist in a lone accident that occurred early Sunday on the Sabo Onimalu corridor, heading inward to Itamaga in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
According to LASTMA’s preliminary investigation, the motorcyclist was traveling at a high speed when he experienced a sudden brake failure, losing control and crashing into the rear of a fully loaded articulated truck carrying flour. The collision resulted in the motorcyclist’s immediate death.
LASTMA officers arrived at the scene promptly and managed the situation. They discovered that the truck driver had fled the scene. The officers pursued and apprehended the driver, who was then handed over to the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Shagamu Road Division in Ikorodu for further investigation.
The motorcyclist’s remains were found trapped under the truck. LASTMA officials carefully extricated the body and handed it over to the deceased’s family after other commercial motorcyclists notified them.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed condolences to the family and called for increased vigilance among road users. He appealed to leaders of commercial motorcycle unions to intensify safety awareness campaigns among their members, stressing the need for regular mechanical inspections, especially of brakes, adherence to traffic rules, and compliance with restrictions on commercial motorcycle movement on certain roads and bridges.
“It is of utmost urgency that operators of commercial motorcycles assume greater responsibility by subjecting their bikes to routine mechanical checks—especially essential components such as brakes. The loss of life resulting from such preventable mechanical failures is both regrettable and unacceptable,” Bakare-Oki said.
He also encouraged the public to cooperate with LASTMA by reporting traffic emergencies, violations, or misconduct through the authority’s toll-free hotline: 0810000527862. LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to preserving lives and promoting orderly conduct on Lagos roads.LASTMA confirms fatal motorcycle accident, arrests truck driver in hit-and-run
