The immediate past Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mrs Maria Oligbi-Edeko, has inaugurated a police station in Uromi, the headquarters of Esan North East Local Council.
The facility, located within the Nigerian Institute of Construction Technology (NICT) premises, was commissioned as part of her constituency intervention project.
Oligbi-Edeko, who represents Esan North-East II under the PDP, stated that the project aims to tackle the increasing security challenges in the Uromi axis.
She highlighted that criminal activities in the area had raised significant concern among residents, disrupting academic activities and livelihoods. “This intervention was conceived to protect lives, support education, and ensure the safety of every stakeholder within Uromi and its surrounding areas,” she said.
The lawmaker described the police station as a strategic effort to restore law, order, and public confidence while deterring criminal elements. She added that the presence of law enforcement officers would curb cult activities, theft, and other vices previously plaguing the community.
Representing the Edo State Governor, Gen. Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd), Chairman of the NICT Governing Council, commended the effort, stating it aligns with the administration’s five-point agenda for development and institutional safety.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, lauded the project as a timely and strategic step toward enhancing peace and security. He assured residents that the police would utilise the facility effectively to improve policing, deter crime, and foster trust between the community and security agencies.
