Bolt customer accuses driver of assault in Port Harcourt

A Bolt customer, Kosisochukwu Okoye, was left with bruises and bleeding after an unpleasant encounter with a Bolt driver, Wugah Kue Prince, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday, June 1, 2025.

Okoye, a Lagos-based realtor who travelled to Rivers State to write an examination, said she had booked a ride from Police Post, Eneka Link Road, to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) City of Miracle, Ogbodo Road, Rumuapu, Rukpokwu-Obio, Rivers State. When the driver arrived, she entered the car, and he asked how much the app displayed. She responded with N3,100, and he demanded that she add something. She told him she would pay the amount shown on the app when she reached her destination.

She stated that along the way, she asked the driver, with number plate BGD 809 EL, to turn on the air conditioner (AC), but he responded that she would have to pay N5,000. She declined and told him not to bother.

“When we got to my destination, he ended the trip and still asked for more than N3,100 on the app. I sent him N3,500, but he refused and insisted on N4,500. I told him it’s not about the extra N1,000; it’s the fact that he was forcing me to pay it.

“He then locked the doors, refused to let me get out, and said he would drive me elsewhere if I didn’t pay more. I opened the door to step out, with one of my legs out, and he suddenly drove off, injuring me,” she explained.

When The Guardian contacted Prince, he said: “She boarded my ride at a hotel, and I told her the price I was charging because we don’t charge the same amount on Bolt due to the price of fuel and other factors.

“I told her to pay me N4,500, but she kept quiet. We stopped at a pharmacy, and she wasted almost 30 minutes. Then we left there and went to another place where she spent another 10 minutes”.

I dropped her at Apple Road, and my ride showed N3,100. I told her she didn’t book the ride well and that the price should be more than N3,100, but she insisted she would pay the amount. She called her boyfriend, and he agreed to pay the money, but this lady insisted she would handle it. She sent me N3,100, opened the door while I was driving off, fell, and threw out her slippers.”

Speaking with The Guardian, Bolt Nigeria’s spokesperson, Femi Adeyemo, said: “We have blocked the driver and asked him to apologise to the customer. We are sorry for what happened. We will continue to work to improve and sanitise the system.”
