Herders kill 43 in Benue as Plateau attack death toll rises to 12

Suspected armed herders, on Sunday, invaded two communities in Gwer West and Apa local councils of Benue State, killing no fewer than 43 persons.

The attack came barely a week after some communities in Gwer West were attacked.

Meanwhile, the death toll as a result of the attack by suspected herdsmen in Mushere Chiefdom of Bokkos Local Council of Plateau State has risen to 12.

In Sunday’s attacks, in which a mobile police officer and 41 others were killed, the armed men stormed Tse Antswam, a suburb of Naka town around 7 pm and shot indiscriminately.

A source in Apa, who identified himself as Tony, said the bandits invaded Edikwu Ankpali community around the same time they attacked Gwer West. “Over 25 persons at Edikwu Ankpali, in Apa, were killed yesterday (Sunday) and the bodies will soon be buried.”

Confirming the attack in Gwer West, the Ter Nagi, Daniel Abomtse, said the attackers came in a guerrilla-style and attacked Tse Antswam.

“As I talk to you now (Monday morning), 18 bodies have been recovered and many people sustained injuries. The way some people were butchered, I doubt if they will survive. Search is still on because many ran into the bush with gunshot wounds and some even entered the well to escape the herdsmen,” the monarch said.

He noted that the village attacked was opposite a military checkpoint along Naka-Makurdi Road.

ALSO, The Guardian gathered that nine communities affected by the attacks include Minjing, Kaban, Nawa, Jyemuut, Kwakas, Mbor, Kopmur, Margif and Horop.

Many people have been displaced and lack the basic necessities of life.

Consequently, the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Mushere communities are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, and other essential services.

Communities and victims are also counting their losses with over 60 per cent of the people, especially women and children, having fled to neighbouring villages of Ron, Mangu, Quaanpan Chakfem, and Nasarawa State.

RCC chairman of Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Rev Kefas Datukun, said the death toll has risen to 12 while 89 houses were razed.
