Mokwa Flooding: Niger governor orders low-key Sallah celebrations

The Governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, has ordered a low-key Eid-el Kabir celebration, and the suspension of Hawan Bariki, Durbar and other elaborate Sallah activities across all Emirates in the state.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Abubakar Usman, said the decision was taken following the devastating flood that ravaged Mokwa and surrounding communities in the state.

The Guardian learnt that about 200 lives were lost to the flood, while over 3,000 residents were displaced as a result of the disaster that also destroyed farmlands and infrastructure.

According to Usman, the decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims of the tragic incident and to allow for a period of mourning, prayer and reflection.

He said the Mokwa flood, described as one of the worst in decades, has left families bereaved, houses and livelihoods destroyed.

“The governor urged citizens to use the occasion to pray for the departed souls and engage in acts of charity for the affected communities,” Usman said.
