Justice Abutu’s passing marks end of an era — CJ, Federal High Court

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court (FHC), Justice John Tsoho, has described the passing of former Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Dantsoho Abutu, as the end of an era in Nigeria’s judicial history.

Justice Abutu died on Monday, June 3, 2025, after a brief illness. He was celebrated for his decades of exemplary service to the Nigerian judiciary and his unwavering dedication to justice and institutional development.

Born on March 15, 1946, in Kogi State, Justice Abutu rose through the judicial ranks to become Chief Judge of the Federal High Court.

He was widely respected for his bold leadership, administrative acumen, and steadfast adherence to the rule of law.

In a statement signed by the Chief Registrar of the court, Sulaiman Amida Hassan, the Federal High Court expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that Justice Abutu’s legacy would remain etched in the annals of Nigerian legal history.

“His leadership and contributions have left indelible marks on the judiciary and the legal community at large,” the statement said.

In a personal tribute, Chief Judge Tsoho described the late jurist as a beacon of wisdom, noting that he would be remembered not only for his legal brilliance but also for his humility, calm demeanour, and the invaluable mentorship he provided to younger judges and lawyers.

“Justice Abutu’s death closes a significant chapter in the court’s history,” Justice Tsoho said. “The entire judiciary mourns the loss of a rare gem.”
