Vitel Wireless becomes first MVNO to complete interconnectivity with all major Nigerian networks

Nigerian first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), Vitel Wireless, has achieved a historic milestone by completing full interconnectivity with all major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in the country.

This development allows Vitel Wireless subscribers to seamlessly make and receive calls from users on MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom (Glo), and 9mobile Nigeria. It marks the first time an MVNO in Nigeria has successfully interconnected with all leading network operators.

Vitel Wireless is also the first MVNO to receive a dedicated number series (0712) from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), setting a new benchmark in the nation’s telecommunications sector.

The company credits the milestone to a combination of direct fiber connections with some MNOs and indirect routing via third-party providers. The interconnectivity was made possible through collaboration between Vitel Wireless, Wireless Technology Labs (WTL), Interconnect Clearinghouse Nigeria (ICN), and technical teams from the four major network providers.

“We wish to thank the regulatory agency, the Nigerian Communications Commission, for their timely interventions and guidance, which were instrumental in achieving this interconnectivity and bringing the formal launch of the Vitel Wireless nationwide network one step closer to reality,” said Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, MFR, Chairman and CEO of Vitel Wireless.

Vitel Wireless began its nationwide pilot phase in May 2025 and is set to roll out fully in July. The company offers a full range of network services—voice, SMS, and data—across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In addition to its interconnectivity feat, the company has reached several other firsts, including being the first MVNO to receive a national numbering plan and international routing codes, launching Africa’s first location awareness network, and unveiling a strategic nationwide rollout plan.

“We are proud to be showing what’s possible for MVNOs, while also creating a path for others to follow,” said Nwabueze. “By leveraging our years of experience in Nigeria’s telecom industry, we are opening up new possibilities where there used to be none.”

Vitel Wireless is positioning itself as a technology-driven provider, offering advanced telecom services integrated with Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and data-driven solutions. Its offerings include personal safety tools and scalable solutions for government welfare programs.

With this achievement, Vitel Wireless is not only pioneering the MVNO space in Nigeria but also setting a new standard for innovation and connectivity in Africa’s largest telecommunications market.
