Oshodi residents decry deplorable road conditions amid rainy season

Residents of Oshodi/Isolo Local Council in Lagos State have raised concerns over the poor state of roads in their area, citing inadequate maintenance, faulty drainage systems, and difficulties caused by the ongoing rainy season.

Key roads leading to the local council headquarters are said to be in dire condition, with waterlogged potholes and eroded surfaces rendering them nearly impassable during heavy rains.

The situation is particularly severe around Oshodi market, a major commercial hub where traders and shoppers grapple with muddy and hazardous roads.
Miss Ifeoma Johnson, a market trader, lamented the seasonal challenges, saying, “The roads become problematic during the rainy season.”

Mr Bayo Adeola, a frequent shopper, shared similar frustrations, noting that the muddy conditions disrupt market activities and make commuting a struggle.

While reconstruction efforts are ongoing in parts of Oshodi, residents are dismayed by the slow pace of work. The area known as “Post Office” is particularly affected, with reports of tricycles, mini-buses (koropes), and private cars struggling to navigate the muddy terrain during rainfall.

Commuters reliant on public transport have called for urgent government intervention to mitigate the impact on daily routines and local businesses.

Responding to the complaints, Mr Gbenga Soloki, Chief Press Secretary to Kehinde Oloyede Al-Maroof, Chairman of the Oshodi/Isolo Local Council, highlighted ongoing improvements.

“Since his assumption of office in 2021, the chairman has completed about 50 road projects and remains focused on addressing more across the local government area,” he said, citing recent completions such as Olori Street in Shogunle.

Despite these efforts, residents are urging the council to expedite repairs as worsening weather continues to exacerbate the challenging conditions.
