Mokwa flood: Niger govt hails UNICEF for prompt intervention

The Niger State Government has commended the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for its swift response to the plight of flood victims in Mokwa Local Government Area.

The Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, gave the commendation during an on-the-spot assessment of some resettlement areas in Mokwa town.

Garba noted that UNICEF’s timely intervention and humanitarian support have rekindled hope for the vulnerable populations affected by the devastating flood.

“I wish to sincerely convey the appreciation of His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, to UNICEF and other partners for their unwavering support to the victims of the Mokwa flood disaster,” he said.

He added, “From the moment the incident occurred, UNICEF has been proactive and visibly on ground. We salute your compassion and commitment to the vulnerable.”

Earlier, the UNICEF Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist from the Kaduna Field Office, Mrs. Theresa Pamma, stated that the agency is actively providing access to healthcare services and working to prevent disease outbreaks among the displaced.

She expressed sympathy with the government and people of Niger State, assuring them of UNICEF’s continued support.

“We are here to support the people and will do our best to ensure their well-being,” she said. “Our intervention will focus on providing clean water, promoting hygiene, and scaling up sanitation to prevent the spread of diseases such as cholera.”

Mrs. Pamma also emphasized that UNICEF will monitor the camps to ensure that children are protected from abuse during their stay in the resettlement areas.
