Nigerians from diverse backgrounds have paid glowing tributes to Elder Margaret Chinyere Ukeagu, the late mother of Dr Kenneth Ukeagu, National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Elder Ukeagu passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 76 and was laid to rest last weekend at Umuegwu Okpuala Afuguri in Umuahia North Council, Abia State.
A funeral service held at the Umuahia Township Stadium preceded her burial. Guests and sympathisers were later treated to a sumptuous meal and lavish entertainment at Williams Memorial Secondary School, Afuguri, amid vibrant cultural displays.
Kenneth Ukeagu, her first son, expressed deep gratitude for his mother’s unwavering support and sacrifices.
In an emotional tribute, he wrote, “My dear Sweet Mum, I have been overwhelmed by various thoughts on how to express my deepest feelings and appreciation for all you did for me during your lifetime. Thank you for being a blessing to humanity and for your endless desire to help and uplift others.”
A light rainfall after the interment was seen by mourners as a symbolic indication of the late matriarch’s peaceful transition to the Lord’s bosom.
The funeral attracted prominent figures, including governors of Abia, Enugu, Imo, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Delta states: Dr Alex Otti, Dr Peter Mbah, Hope Uzodimma, Dr Agbu Kefas, Francis Nwifuru, and Sheriff Oborevwori.
Also in attendance were INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu, federal and state lawmakers, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senator Osita Izunaso, the Director-General of NYSC, traditional rulers, and senior clergy.
The Archbishop of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, Dr Chibuzo Okpoko, who officiated the service, urged Elder Ukeagu’s children to emulate their mother’s legacy of generosity and prayerfulness.
Pastor David Bamiloye, another officiating minister, in his sermon, emphasised the importance of trusting in God for justice and sustenance, saying, “God is all you need to get all you need.”
