• Gbenga Omotoso, now Lagos State Commissioner for Information, who won Editor of the Year multiple times
• Adeola Akinremi, whose investigative prowess earned him the Newspaper Reporter of the Year award in 2014
• Mohammed Idris Malagi, publisher and media strategist, honoured for leadership and innovation
• Toyosi Ogunseye, now the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Precinct, a premier leadership development organisation in the United States, received the NMMA as Environment Journalist of the Year
• Maik Nwosu, currently a Professor of English and Chair of the Department of English and Literary Arts at the University of Denver, Colorado, United States. A distinguished writer and scholar, Nwosu received the Nigeria Media Merit Award for Journalist of the Year in 1994
• Adejuwon Soyinka, who serves as the Regional Editor (West Africa) for The Conversation Africa, received the award multiple times
• Adeola Akinremi, now a consultant at the World Bank in Washington DC, won the NMMA as Feature Writer of the Year and Newspaper Reporter of the Year. He is renowned for exposing the plagiarism of Barack Obama’s speech by President Muhammadu Buhari

Day-to-day administration is handled by Ideas Communications Limited, a co-founder of the NMMA Scheme and one of Nigeria’s foremost events management agencies. Trustees such as Dr. Haroun Adamu and programme administrators like Mr. Yemi Akeju have played pivotal roles in steering the scheme through political transitions, technological shifts, and evolving media landscapes. At the inauguration of the first Panel of Assessors in 1991, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola aptly captured the mission ahead when he remarked: “Unless and until the press becomes the eyes, the ears, and the mouth of the electorate… government shall continue to be run like a company without internal control and without proper audit.” Three decades on, NMMA continues to empower the press to fulfil that watchdog role.
