When the inaugural Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) ceremony took place in 1992, few could have predicted the transformative legacy it would establish. Born in 1990 and formally launched in December 1991, the NMMA was envisioned as more than just an award; it was a bold commitment to uphold integrity, promote ethical journalism, and inspire national development through the media. Thirty years on, that vision has not only endured but flourished.

The NMMA began with a focused purpose: to recognise and reward excellence in Nigeria’s print journalism. Early award categories included Reporter of the Year, Columnist of the Year, Business Reporter, Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, and Photojournalist of the Year. While the initial ceremony was modest, it carried weighty aspirations. The organisers, driven by a conviction that journalism could shape a better society, were determined to reward merit over influence.

Backed by Nigeria’s foremost media statesmen, the NMMA drew early inspiration from legendary journalist Alhaji Babatunde Jose, who served as its founding chairman. With leadership like his, the foundation was laid for a culture of excellence and credibility.

The NMMA Trust oversees the direction of the NMMA Scheme, the standard of the award screening process, and the conduct of the annual programme of the scheme. The Trustees also appoint the Award Panel of Assessors from a cream of distinguished and experienced media leaders who share the noble vision and ideals of the NMMA.

Criteria for Award Selection
The NMMA maintains a rigorous and transparent selection process designed to honour only the most outstanding individuals and organisations in the media landscape. Each year, a distinguished panel of assessors, comprising respected media veterans, academics, and industry professionals, undertakes a meticulous evaluation guided by the following key criteria:
• Excellence and Professional Output
Candidates must demonstrate exceptional journalistic standards, innovative storytelling, and sustained contributions to media practice, ethics, and leadership.
• Positive Societal Impact
The NMMA places strong emphasis on journalism that drives public awareness, promotes good governance, encourages national development, or amplifies marginalised voices.
• Inclusivity and Diversity

The award recognises practitioners and institutions that champion diversity, equity, and inclusion—highlighting media efforts that reflect Nigeria’s social realities and foster a more inclusive narrative.

These robust criteria ensure that every NMMA honouree not only excels professionally but also embodies the values of integrity, responsibility, and service to society.

Growing with the Industry
As Nigeria’s media evolved—from print to radio, television, and digital platforms—the NMMA kept pace. Today, the scheme honours excellence in over 50 categories. From a few hundred submissions in the early years, the NMMA now receives over 1,000 entries annually, reinforcing its position as Nigeria’s most credible and competitive media recognition platform.

To promote inclusivity and decentralise the celebration of journalistic excellence, NMMA adopted a rotational hosting model. The ceremony has travelled across major cities including Lagos, Abuja, Abeokuta, Ilorin, Yenagoa, Akure, and Owerri. This approach not only deepens the scheme’s national reach but fosters regional pride and broader participation in media development.

Guardians of Standards: The Panel of Assessors
The credibility of the NMMA lies in its rigorous assessment process, overseen by an independent Panel of Assessors. These seasoned professionals—drawn from media, academia, and public service—evaluate entries based on a strict scoring system, with a minimum threshold of 70% to qualify for recognition.
Notable past assessors include:

• Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye – Chair of the panel and media scholar
• Dele Adetiba – Advertising pioneer and former MD, Lintas
• Duro Onabolu – Veteran public relations strategist
• Alhaji G.B. Kankarofi – Former Registrar, APCON
• Emeka Nwofor, Dr. Elizabeth Ikem, Alero Edu, and others who have collectively upheld the award’s integrity

These assessors embody the NMMA’s ideals, ensuring that merit, professionalism, and public impact remain the core criteria for recognition.

The Significance of the Awards
The NMMA is widely acknowledged as a cornerstone of journalistic excellence in Nigeria, fostering professionalism, innovation, and national development within the media industry. By recognising outstanding contributions to ethical journalism, public service reporting, and impactful storytelling, the NMMA plays a critical role in shaping media leadership and strengthening democratic values. Over the years, the NMMA has grown in stature, earning widespread respect as the country’s most prestigious media honour. The awards are organised by the NMMA Trust and administered by Ideas Communications Limited, a reputable media and events management firm. Through its enduring commitment to transparency and professional standards, the NMMA has positioned itself as a credible authority in identifying and celebrating excellence across all sectors of media practice.

Eligibility and Geographic Scope
The NMMA adopts a nationally inclusive approach, welcoming nominations from media professionals and organisations across Nigeria. While the awards are primarily focused on Nigerian journalism, eligibility spans all geopolitical zones, provided the work submitted contributes meaningfully to the Nigerian media space or public discourse. This wide-reaching scope ensures that practitioners making an impact locally, regionally, and internationally are recognised, reinforcing NMMA’s commitment to a diverse and representative media ecosystem.

Annual Number of Awards
Despite receiving hundreds of entries annually, the NMMA remains highly competitive and discerning. Only one winner is selected per award category, maintaining the prestige and integrity of the honour. By recognising a carefully selected group of outstanding journalists and media institutions each year, the NMMA preserves the exclusivity and significance of its awards, ensuring that each accolade represents the highest standard of merit in Nigerian media.

Notable Past Winners
Over the past three decades, the NMMA has honoured journalists whose work has defined the industry. Winners have included courageous reporters, visionary editors, and innovative broadcasters whose stories have informed the nation, held power to account, and amplified the voices of the marginalised. Among them are:
• Gbenga Omotoso, now Lagos State Commissioner for Information, who won Editor of the Year multiple times
• Adeola Akinremi, whose investigative prowess earned him the Newspaper Reporter of the Year award in 2014
• Mohammed Idris Malagi, publisher and media strategist, honoured for leadership and innovation
• Toyosi Ogunseye, now the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Presidential Precinct, a premier leadership development organisation in the United States, received the NMMA as Environment Journalist of the Year

Built to Last: Institutional Legacy
The NMMA is managed by the NMMA Trust—comprising distinguished media veterans from across Nigeria—who guide its strategic direction and uphold its founding values. Day-to-day administration is handled by Ideas Communications Limited, a co-founder of the NMMA Scheme and one of Nigeria’s foremost events management agencies. Trustees such as Dr. Haroun Adamu and programme administrators like Mr. Yemi Akeju have played pivotal roles in steering the scheme through political transitions, technological shifts, and evolving media landscapes. At the inauguration of the first Panel of Assessors in 1991, the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola aptly captured the mission ahead when he remarked: “Unless and until the press becomes the eyes, the ears, and the mouth of the electorate… government shall continue to be run like a company without internal control and without proper audit.” Three decades on, NMMA continues to empower the press to fulfil that watchdog role.

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter
As NMMA marked its 30th anniversary in 2022, it stood as a beacon of consistency in an increasingly fragmented media environment. Looking to the future, the NMMA is set to:
• Deepen its digital integration
• Recognise excellence across emerging platforms
• Encourage journalism that fosters national unity and democratic accountability
By championing cross-platform storytelling and amplifying underreported issues, the NMMA is positioning itself to remain relevant in the age of AI, algorithms, and misinformation.
Why NMMA Still Matters
In a world awash with noise but often devoid of verified truth, the Nigeria Media Merit Award serves as a compass pointing towards integrity, courage, and professional excellence. More than just a trophy, it affirms that journalism matters, that it is a public trust, not merely a private enterprise. As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, the NMMA will remain essential: validating the finest work, inspiring younger generations, and defending the timeless values of truth, accountability, and service.
