Bago orders closure of Mokwa IDP camps by end of June

The Niger State Government has announced plans to shut down all temporary Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps established for flood victims in Mokwa Local Government Area by the end of June 2025.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed this on Monday, June 8, 2025, during a visit to commiserate with the victims of last year’s flood disaster in the area.

Governor Bago stated that the state government is not in support of maintaining IDP camps and will instead provide financial assistance to the displaced persons to enable them rent temporary accommodation. He added that the Federal Government is expected to begin construction of permanent resettlement homes for the victims.

“We do not encourage the establishment of more IDP camps in any part of the state. Therefore, the government has concluded plans to close down the Mokwa IDP camps,” Bago said.

“We will provide funds to all flood victims in the camps to enable them secure temporary accommodation, pending the completion of the Federal Government’s resettlement housing.”

He revealed that the state government would provide land and infrastructure to support the speedy construction of the resettlement homes by the Federal Government.

He directed the Ministry of Lands and Survey to issue a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Federal Government for the proposed site.

In addition, the Governor announced the distribution of 10 truckloads each of rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum to the flood victims as part of relief efforts.

Bago reassured the victims that all donations received would be transparently and judiciously distributed through a committee headed by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba.

He appreciated the Federal Government, donor partners, government agencies, and individuals who have supported the victims, and prayed for the repose of those who lost their lives in the disaster.

Earlier in the event, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, extended his sympathies to the people of Mokwa and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their faith.

The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, and former Deputy Governor, Mohammed Ahmed Ketso, also commended Governor Bago for his compassion and proactive support, while appreciating all those who have made donations to assist the victims.
