Police arrest suspects over death of Ifo trader

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ifo Division, SP Kamorudeen Olabisi, has confirmed the arrest and remand of suspects linked to the killing of a trader, Mrs. Blessing Eze, at the Ifo Market on Friday, June 6, 2025.

SP Olabisi made the disclosure during a peace meeting convened by the Chairman of Ifo Local Government, Hon. Idris Olalekan Kusimo aimed at calming tensions sparked by the tragic incident.

According to the DPO, the individuals involved, identified as market touts, have been arrested, charged in court, and remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre. He assured residents that investigations are ongoing and more arrests will be made.

He also urged traders and residents to report all cases of extortion, harassment, and violence to security agencies for prompt action.

In his address, Hon. Kusimo announced the launch of a full-scale investigation into the incident, pledging that the circumstances surrounding the killing would be thoroughly uncovered.

The meeting, which brought together political leaders, security agencies, traditional representatives, transport union executives, and members of the Igbo community, sought to restore calm and ensure that justice is served.

Condemning the killing, Hon. Kusimo described it as a “grievous and unacceptable act” that goes against the values of Ifo’s peace-loving people. He vowed that all perpetrators would be brought to book.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Igbo community, while also appreciating Governor Dapo Abiodun for his swift and fatherly intervention in restoring peace to the area.

Appealing for calm, Kusimo reiterated his administration’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and law enforcement. He commended the Nigerian Police, DSS, Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies for their prompt response and ongoing stabilization efforts.

Also speaking, Monday Chukwuji, from the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Inter-Ethnic Affairs, emphasized the Ogun State Government’s dedication to resolving the crisis and promoting inter-ethnic harmony.

High Chief Theophilus Ikpeghibum, Babaloja of the Ndi’gbo Traders, commended Kusimo’s intervention but demanded an immediate end to illegal levies and extortion by market miscreants.

Chief Tijani Adesina, representative of the Olu of Ifo, described the Igbo community as peaceful and an essential part of Ifo society.

He condemned the attack and assured that the palace is taking decisive steps to curb criminal activities around the market.

In his remarks, Chief Willy Okonkwo, Eze Ndi’gbo of Ogun State, lauded Kusimo’s proactive leadership and efforts to defuse tensions.

He urged Igbo traders in Ifo to remain peaceful and maintain unity with their host community.

He also expressed gratitude to Governor Abiodun for his administration’s development strides across the state.
