The Justice and Equity Movement has officially called off its planned June 12 protest against key figures in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, citing revelations that the information behind the demonstration was based on “pure mischief and blackmail.”
The protest had been set to target Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede, and Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume. However, the group, led by Comrade Moshood Ajibola, reversed course after uncovering what it described as a “web of deceit” behind the protest’s agenda.
In a statement, Ajibola said: “This is not merely a matter of misinformation; it is an affront to the very essence of our democracy and the sacrifices made on June 12—a date symbolizing our collective struggle for justice and equity.”
The movement urged civil society organizations to verify facts before mobilizing for public demonstrations. “We must remain vigilant against those who seek to exploit the sacred date of June 12 for mischief and manipulation,” Ajibola warned.
The group also issued a stern message to the architects of the disinformation campaign, vowing to expose and hold them accountable. “We are committed to exposing those behind these deceitful tactics. Your time of reckoning is coming,” he added.
As Nigerians commemorate June 12 Democracy Day, the group emphasized its dedication to protecting the values of truth and justice, urging citizens to unite against misinformation and uphold the sanctity of democratic discourse.
