Augustine Friday Nabueze was in a different class, at the weekend, as he outclassed a star-studded field from start to win the Seventh OBJ Golf Tournament, held at the Abeokuta Golf Club. The competition is sponsored by the First Bank of Nigeria yearly, which pledged its continuous support of the competition.
Playing off handicap three, Nabueze grossed 76 for a 73-net score to defeat a field of 134-golfers in the event put together in honour of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo.
Speaking at the end of the contest, First Bank’s CEO, Olusegun Alebiosu, also a golfer, said the continuous sponsorship of the tournament is sacrosanct as it’s in line with the bank’s commitment to supporting any sporting initiative that brings Nigerians together.
“At First Bank, we appreciate sports as part of our strategy of reaching across the society and that is in line with our theme of being woven into the fabric of the society. And sport, like the OBJ Golf Tournament, is a good way of bringing people together, he said.
He added that the OBJ Golf tournament will enjoy the same commitment that the Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship and the Georgian Cup in Kaduna.
Reacting to the bank’s gesture, former President, Obasanjo, a renowned squash player, said First Bank’s consistent sponsorship has broken his resistance to the game, saying it’s now time to take to golf.
“First Bank’s consistent sponsorship of this tournament in my honour has finally broken my resistance to golf and I have therefore decided to join the League of Golf Players,” Obasanjo said.
Golfers drawn from across the country participated in the competition.
