A 100-level student of Taraba State Polytechnic, Iorhee Saanmoyol Paul, is striving to rebuild his life after a tragic electrocution incident on May 21, 2025, led to the amputation of both his hands.
Paul was hoisting a flag for a political party near the polytechnic gate along Roadblock to ATC Road in Jalingo, when the flag’s iron handle accidentally touched a high-tension power line. The resulting electric shock left him critically injured.
He was rushed to Gilead Hospital for emergency care and later transferred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital within the Taraba State Specialist Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. After 28 days of intensive treatment, doctors amputated both hands on June 19 to save his life.
Although the Taraba State government has covered Paul’s medical expenses, concerned citizens have called for additional support to aid his recovery and rehabilitation.
Iliya Kefas, State Coordinator of Operation Keep Taraba Clean, urged the government to provide Paul with post-treatment care, including rehabilitation and vocational training.
Paul expressed gratitude to the government but appealed for further help, including artificial limbs and a sustainable livelihood.
“My joy today is because I am alive, but I couldn’t fulfil my plans in life,” he said. “When I found myself in the hospital and came out of the trauma, I asked myself, ‘Why am I alive?’ But the scripture says there’s nothing you can give in exchange for your life. So, I must thank God.”
Paul’s family also appreciated the government.
