Asuzu: ‘Why I want my son to play for Nigeria’

It is an honour and rare privilege for a young man to be singled out among millions of his compatriots to represent his country. That is the privilege Godwin Asuzu, who is the father of new kid on the bloc, Jonathan Spiff Asuzu, desires for his son.

Explaining why he wants his son to play for Nigeria instead of Argentina, where the youngster plays for Atlético River Plate, Godwin Asuzu said the teen star always talked about playing for the Golden Eaglets or the Flying Eagles instead of donning the Albiceleste’s shirts.

“Despite all that is happening in Nigeria, I believe we should always be patriotic,” Godwin Asuzu said. I am happy that we are not forcing him to choose Nigeria or Argentina, the decision has been his all along and it is left for the authorities to seek him out.”

Born in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Jonathan Spiff Asuzu is uncapped at international level, and qualifies to play for his country of birth, Argentina, as well as Nigeria’s national teams through his Nigerian father.

The senior Asuzu, a River Plate fan, moved from Nigeria to Argentina 32 years ago in search of work and is married to an Argentinian, Maria, according to the official website of River Plate.

Jonathan Spiff Asuzu has been a sensation in Argentina, banging in goals weekly for River Plate’s youth side. Described as an intelligent forward, who reads the game well, Asuzu is also known for his remarkable speed and an excellent ability to finish with both feet.
