CISLAC calls for gender-inclusive approach to tobacco control in Gombe
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for signing into law two landmark bills establishing the new Federal College of Education (Special) in Dukku and a Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Billiri, both located in Gombe State.
Yahaya described the presidential assent as a profound demonstration of responsive and inclusive leadership that will leave a lasting impact on education and healthcare in Gombe State and the North-East sub-region.
He said: “On behalf of the government and the good people of Gombe State, I sincerely commend President Bola Tinubu for this historic gesture.
“These institutions will not only enhance access to quality education and specialised healthcare but will also create employment opportunities and stimulate development in our state,” the governor said.
IN another development, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has advocated a gender-inclusive approach to tobacco control in Gombe.
The Senior Programme Officer at CISLAC, Solomon Adoga, made the advocacy during a training workshop on tobacco taxation and gender mainstreaming organised by the centre with support from Tax Justice Network Africa.
He noted that tobacco affects women more than men, citing its link to breast cancer, cervical cancer, and other health problems.
Adoga emphasised the importance of making tobacco control policies gender-inclusive to protect women.
Adoga also highlighted the dangers of tobacco on public health, including increasing risks of non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and mental illness.
