Nigerians must support refugees, IDPs to live better – Ashafa

Senator Gbenga Ashafa has said that Nigerians must do their best to support refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to live better so that they do not feel the pain of their plights.

He stated this at an event to mark the World Refugee Day by African Refugee Foundation (AREF) in Lagos. Ashafa stated that everyone should be involved in anything that has to do with refugees or internally displaced persons.

He said that the government can only do so much and has shown the much it can do, so the vacuum should be filled by the people, including private sector players.

“So, let us be our brothers’ keeper, whether they are in IDP or refugee camps, by doing our little to make the world better,” he said. Ashafa praised the founder of AREF and his son, Olujimi Olusola, for carrying on the task.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of AREF, Olujimi Olushola, stated that marking the World Refugee Day is important to remember that there are refugees globally.

“Worldwide, there are over 50 million refugees and people displaced internally.”

So, we need to remember them and make sure that they form part of our thinking culture.”

As part of activities to mark the day, a medical outreach to attend to vulnerable persons was conducted throughout the day in Lagos aside from providing cooked and raw foods to over 500 less privileged persons in different parts of Lagos and Oyo states.
