Mustapha Hamza Buhari Bakwana, a former political adviser to ex-Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), aligning with the Kwankwasiyya movement.
Bakwana announced his departure from the APC on Wednesday at a meeting with his political supporters in Kano.
He accused the party of marginalisation, exclusion, and what he described as a departure from its founding principles.
“I have been part of the APC since its inception, but over time, we were treated as outsiders,” Bakwana said. “There was no regard for contribution, no room for internal democracy.”
He alleged that under Ganduje’s leadership, the party had shifted its focus from governance to personal vendettas and misinformation.
“They have turned the party into a private estate where only a few can thrive, while the rest are sidelined and silenced,” he said.
Bakwana’s defection is seen as a setback for the APC in Kano, where he was previously viewed as one of Ganduje’s close political allies.
