Award-winning Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has advised young women not to rush into marriage with the wrong person simply because of pressure, saying it can shape or scatter their entire future.
Adichie made this known while speaking at a recent students’ event, where she encouraged women to be wise and intentional when picking who to marry.
According to the author of “Half of a Yellow Sun”, the kind of person a woman chooses as a life partner can either lift her up or pull her down. She urged ladies to choose someone kind and supportive, rather than settling out of desperation.
In her words, “It’s so important for a woman to have her own, a sense of self-fulfilment, it doesn’t matter what it is. It is really important who you choose. Sometimes, as a young woman, you can tell that the person you are with is not a good person, but you are desperate to get married. Do not settle, be careful who you choose, the person you choose as a life partner will make a huge difference in your life. If you choose someone kind and supportive, it will make all the difference; there are good men out there.”
The popular novelist, who has always spoken openly about gender equality and women’s rights, said that women should first focus on knowing themselves, nurturing their dreams, and protecting their peace before anything else.
Her comment quickly went viral, sparking a range of reactions online. Some agreed with her message, while others shared their personal experiences in the comment section.
An X user, @alhaja_wendy, posted, “Well said, who you choose to marry will affect your destiny either positively or negatively.”
Another user, @dr_pinesol, said, “I am grateful to my partner, God’s gift to me. Peace of mind and his kindness wan wound me.”
For @thefoodnetworknig2, the message was a wake-up call.
She wrote, “Your father sponsored your education to master level in good schools, but then you decide to choose someone who would not let you do something tangible with your life… you have not only failed yourself, you have also failed your father.”
