Former Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Okanlawon Salako, has insisted developers, government and other stakeholders must collaborate to address cases of building collapse.
Speaking at an event organised by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning University of Lagos, in collaboration with Adron Homes in Lagos, he insisted developers must use quality materials, hire certified professionals, adhere to building codes and conduct regular structural assessments.
With the theme, “Recurring building collapse in Lagos: The challenge of regulatory oversight and construction practices, he further identified regulatory failures in housing developments as, weak enforcements, substandard materials, lack of qualified professionals and unauthorised modifications.
Salako further identified political interference and corruption as challenges.
He stressed need for capacity building, certification of artisans, and the full digitalisation of building approval processes.
Group Managing Director & Chairman. Adron Homes & Properties Limited Adetola EmmanuelKing, observed, “buildings do not collapse by accident. They collapse because somewhere along the chain of planning, approval, construction, or supervision, individuals choose to compromise.”
He added all actors within the building industry must observe highest standards of competence and ethical responsibility.
