TotalEnergies is advancing Nigeria’s energy security with two major gas field projects projected to deliver a combined plateau output of about 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (bpd) when fully operational.
Country Chair of TotalEnergies in Nigeria, Matthieu Bouyer, said the Ubeta gas field, located in the OML 58 onshore license, has entered its execution phase. He mentioned that when completed, the project will contribute about 70,000 boepd, including condensates.
“The 70,000 bpd from Ubeta is a major milestone, and first gas/commissioning is expected by 2027,” he said He made this known at the just concluded NOG Energy Week 2025 during a panel session, titled: “Pragmatically Achieving Energy Abundance.”
In addition to Ubeta, TotalEnergies is progressing with the IMA gas field, located within the OML 112 and 117 blocks under the AMNI/TEPNG Joint Venture, about 15km off Nigeria’s southeast coast.
The project, currently at the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, also targets a plateau of 70,000 boepd and is expected to reach a final investment decision (FID) in 2026.
Together, both fields will add significant volumes to Nigeria’s gas output, supporting the government’s goal of increasing domestic gas utilisation to drive industrialisation, power generation and cleaner energy supply.
Bouyer acknowledged the role of regulators and partners in accelerating these projects. He thanked the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory
Commission (NUPRC) and NNPC Limited for their continued support, which he said positions TotalEnergies ahead in meeting national targets. He also pointed to the company’s recent progress, including the Ntokon discovery in 2023, which is moving towards development, and the acquisition of additional oil blocks in the last year.
On sustainability, Bouyer highlighted TotalEnergies’ investment in technology to curb emissions.
“We’re deploying more advanced technology than ever to extract more oil and gas with fewer emissions. For instance, we use drone-based AUSEA (Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Application) technology in our upstream operations to detect methane leaks. We are also in partnership with NNPC Limited on this initiative. We’re here to support Nigeria, and we’re doing it sustainably,” he said.
