Miss One Nigeria semifinalists raise over ₦2m to fight period poverty

The Shero 1M Pad Campaign, a groundbreaking period poverty intervention initiative, proudly announced the official inauguration of its global ambassadorship network and the crucial backing of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) upon the launch of the Shero 1M Pad Campaign on May 28, 2025, to commemmorate the United Nations World Menstrual Hygiene Day. This strategic alliance marks a significant step towards ensuring dignified menstrual hygiene management for millions of girls across Nigeria.

The Shero 1M Pad Campaign aims to distribute one million sanitary pads to underserved girls, complemented by essential menstrual hygiene education. To galvanise widespread support and resources, a formidable global ambassadorship network, comprising influential figures and prominent beauty queens, was formally established, and an alliance was formed with the Miss One Nigeria Organisation to promote community service. These ambassadors and the Miss One Nigeria semifinalists have leveraged their platforms to drive critical fundraising efforts and raise global awareness about the pervasive issue of period poverty.

“Period poverty is a silent crisis that affects millions of girls, hindering their education, health, and dignity, and Miss One Nigeria is happy to participate in this impactful initiative” stated Mrs Anthonia Ahanor, President of Miss One Nigeria Organization.

“With the launch of our global ambassadorship network and the invaluable support from UNFPA, we are not just distributing pads; we are empowering girls, dignifying the menstrual experience, and fostering a future where no girl misses school or opportunities due to her period”, stated Violet Ejiata, Executive Director of Shero Foundation.

The involvement of UNFPA underscores the campaign’s commitment to evidence-based interventions and sustainable impact. Their support will provide critical technical guidance, logistical assistance, and strategic advocacy, ensuring the campaign’s reach and effectiveness are maximized.

A key component of this ambitious initiative involves the semifinalists of the prestigious Miss One Nigeria pageant. These young women have actively participated in the 30-day fundraising drive and, crucially, will return to their respective home states. There, they will personally oversee the distribution of the collected sanitary pads and conduct vital menstrual hygiene lectures in public schools. This hands-on approach ensures that the intervention is not only about providing products but also about imparting knowledge, destigmatizing menstruation, and fostering healthy practices across the six geopolitical zones.
The semifinalists will receive certificates of participation from the Shero Foundation, certifying them as volunteers for the campaign.

“We are incredibly proud to have our Miss One Nigeria semifinalists at the forefront of this noble cause,” said Mrs Anthonia. “Their dedication to returning to their communities to lead pad distribution and education sessions demonstrates the true essence of beauty with purpose. They will be catalysts for change, one school, one girl at a time.”

The Shero 1M Pad Campaign believes that every girl deserves the right to manage her menstruation safely and with dignity. This multi-faceted approach, combining global fundraising with grassroots distribution and education, is set to make a tangible difference in the lives of Nigerian girls, keeping them in school and enabling them to reach their full potential.

The foundation urges individuals, corporate organizations, and philanthropic bodies to join this vital movement by contributing to the fundraising efforts.
