• Group protests against delay in implementation of administrative law
• ActionAid, Inspired Youth Network urge massive participation
The All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos State chapter, has concluded its mega rally, marking the culmination of the party’s campaign efforts ahead of the local council elections scheduled to hold on July 12, 2025.
The state’s APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, who spoke, yesterday, at Lagos Central Senatorial District mega rally programme, charged party members to ensure victory at the polls by galvanising support and reaching out to voters.
Ojelabi stressed the party’s track record of providing development and creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive in Lagos State.
On his part, Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Tajudeen Olusi, appealed to all ethnic groups based in the state to support the APC, saying that supporting the APC would be in the best interest of the people of the state.
MEANWHILE, a group, the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR), yesterday, staged a peaceful protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex to submit a formal position paper expressing concern over the delayed implementation of the Lagos State Local Council Administrative Law.
The group, however, described the delay as unconstitutional and politically motivated.
President of CHSR, Alex Omotehinse, who led the protest, stated that once a law is signed, its implementation is immediately binding, unless otherwise stated in the Law itself.
Responding on behalf of the House, the lawmaker representing Epe Constituency I, Abiodun Tobun, assured the group that its petition had been duly noted and would be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for attention.
ALSO, two non-government organisations, ActionAid Nigeria and Inspired Youth Network, have called on residents of the state to fully participate in the process.
The two bodies, during a one-day pre-election forum with the theme: “Strengthening Youth Political Participation in Lagos Local Council Election’ in Lagos State, posited that local councils are the foundation of democratic governance, which usually influence key sectors like education, health, infrastructure, and economic development.
In her keynote address, Governance Specialist at ActionAid Nigeria, Judith Gbagidi, said: “Despite making up to over 60 per cent of Lagos State’s population and being the majority of registered voters, young people under 35 years old occupy less than 15 per cent of elected positions across the councils and development areas.”
Also, Oluwatoyin Adejokun, who represented the Executive Director of Inspired Youth Network, Ayomikun Olugbode, stressed the importance of bridging the gap between politics and youth engagement.
She urged the youths to adopt long-term political engagement.
