Don seeks AI, science education integration

Organic and analytical chemistry expert at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Oluwafunmilola Akinpelu

As Nigeria aims to embrace progress in science and technological innovation, an academic has stressed the urgent need to revamp chemistry education by incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies.

The organic and analytical chemistry expert from the University of Ibadan, Dr Oluwafunmilola Akinpelu, called for a significant overhaul of Nigeria’s science education system.

She emphasised that chemistry is fundamental to advancements in key sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, petroleum, environmental sustainability, and industrial manufacturing.

Speaking in an interview, Akinpelu noted that the global scientific landscape is shifting toward a future shaped by the synergy of human intellect and AI.

She maintained that for Nigeria to remain relevant in this evolution, secondary and tertiary institutions must urgently update their science curricula to reflect current international standards and research practices.

Akinpelu, who is currently conducting research in robotic chemistry for organic synthesis in South Africa, argued that integrating AI into chemical research holds vast potential for solving some of the country’s most critical problems.

She pointed out that AI-driven chemistry could lead to faster and more cost-effective drug discovery, promote environmental sustainability, and improve industrial productivity.

She explained that many diseases disproportionately affecting Nigerians could benefit from accelerated treatment development powered by AI.

According to her, the combination of technology and chemical research offers transformative potential for both healthcare and industrial applications.
