Kano State Police Command has announced the commencement of a new security initiative, “Operation Kukan Kura,” as part of measures to reinforce crime prevention strategies following a recent sweep that led to 98 arrests across the state.
At a press conference held on Thursday, Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Bakori provided updates on ongoing enforcement efforts, revealing that the suspects were linked to 21 cases over the past 24 days.
Offences cited include armed robbery, kidnapping, vehicle theft, thuggery, drug trafficking, and fraud. Among those in custody are four suspected kidnappers, five alleged drug dealers, and 47 individuals reportedly involved in street violence.
Bakori said recovered items from various crime scenes include weapons, stolen vehicles, motorcycles, mobile phones, counterfeit money, and prohibited substances.
He noted that the arrests demonstrate the effectiveness of the Command’s recent tactics.
Introducing “Operation Kukan Kura,” Bakori described it as a targeted programme designed to enhance policing outcomes through community engagement. He explained that the operation aligns with principles of cooperative law enforcement, allowing residents to play active roles in reporting crime and sharing intelligence.
He stated, “The objective of the Special Operation is to detect and disrupt threats associated with thuggery in Kano Metropolis, cross-border kidnapping, and the circulation of narcotics,” adding that the programme would build upon previously adopted methods that had proven successful.
The Commissioner commended the public for its continued support and urged residents to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious behaviour. Contact numbers for the Command’s emergency response service were provided to encourage direct reporting and improve response time.
