UBA expands into key African markets, upgrades French licence

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has reiterated its commitment to pan-African growth with plans to expand into high-potential markets across the continent to strengthen its position as Africa’s global bank.

The development followed the conclusion of UBA Group’s 2025 Half-Year Business Review held recently at its global headquarters in Lagos.

The meeting, led by Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, UBA, Oliver Alawuba, brought together senior executives from UBA’s operations across 24 countries.

Alawuba underscored the bank’s continued focus on unlocking growth in Africa’s emerging markets while deepening penetration in its existing 20 African countries of operation.

He revealed that over 51.7 per cent of UBA Group’s revenues now come from non-Nigerian operations, exemplifying its growing pan-African footprint of diversified financial services.

Alawuba restated UBA’s vision of building a truly global institution anchored in Africa but serving customers across continents

He said further strategic expansion positions the bank to unlock new opportunities, support intra-Africa trade, and deliver world-class banking experiences wherever clients choose to do business.

Alawuba explained that since its initial expansion outside Nigeria with its entry into Ghana in 2004, UBA has rapidly grown across Africa, operating in 20 countries today.

According to him, the bank also maintains a presence in key international financial hubs including the United Kingdom, France, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates.

Alawuba disclosed that UBA is currently upgrading its banking license in France to enhance its capacity for cross-border trade facilitation, investment flows, and diaspora banking.

He said these efforts complement the bank’s long-standing presence in New York and recent plans to launch operations in Saudi Arabia.

He said these moves signal a clear message of UBA’s intent to reshape the competitive landscape, adding that the bank’s international reach is designed to connect Africa to the world and the world to Africa.
