Afrobeats singer, Ayoleyi Solomon, popularly known as Reekado Banks, has said he would have felt too entitled if he had remained under Mavin Records.
He made the remark during a recent interview on The Esther Show, which began trending on Friday.
According to the singer, exiting Don Jazzy’s label in 2018 forced him to become more accountable and helped him understand the reality of the music business.
“I do not think I would have gathered as much knowledge as I have now.
“Yeah, because I would be absolutely catered to and, you know, I would feel entitled.
“You know I would feel entitled to certain successes, certain. I feel like I would not take the blame for my failures. I would blame it on the label.
“So now, I have absolute knowledge of what it takes. I have absolute knowledge of what they did for me. I do appreciate the label. But back then, you feel like maybe you probably wouldn’t have.”
Reekado Banks, who joined Mavin in 2014, became a household name after releasing several hit songs including Oluwa Ni, Katapot, and Easy (Jeje). He left the label after four years to pursue an independent career.
Speaking further, the Standard crooner explained that staying longer at the label would have made him less responsible for his actions.
“If I stayed much longer, it would be like, I’m under the biggest label, so whatever little thing I do should count. But now I know what I am, I know exactly what I am doing,” he added.
The singer also opened up about failed business moves after leaving the label. He said he entered into a new partnership that later collapsed before he decided to go fully independent.
“And then I had to get into a different partnership. Had an issue with the partner. And then I am standing on my own. Yeah. But that did not work out,” he said.
Reekado Banks recently released his second studio album, The Game Needs You, nine years after his debut album Spotlight.
