Lamentations as flood sacks Ogun community

Residents of Ogo -Oluwa Community, Matogbun in Ifo Local Council of Ogun State, have sought Governor Dapo Abiodun’s intervention over the perennial flood that has destroyed properties worth billions naira in the area.

The development has rendered many residents homeless while others fled to safer spaces, turning the community into a ghost town. The Guardian gathered that the situation was exacerbated by lack of a drainage system into which to channel the rain water.

Chairman of the Community Development Association (CDA), Adewale Abayomi, disclosed that many abandoned their properties or sold them due to the flood.

“This is a yearly occurrence mostly caused by the lack of proper drainage to channel rain water to the right place,” he said. “It is a big problem for the landlords.

“Every year, we contribute money to pump the water out of the area. We have been to Ifo Local Council and met with the chairman. We also wrote letters to the state government to come to our aid.”

He noted that water from adjoining communities finds it way to Ogo-Oluwa, causing havoc in the area. He urged the state government to come to their aid and rescue residents from the havoc of the perennial flooding in the area .

One of the residents, Mr Sola Oguniyi, explained that the flood crippled commercial activities in the area, affecting children’s education.
