Tinubu 2027 think-tank mourns Buhari, praises his discipline, integrity

The Board of Trustees of the National Agenda for Tinubu 2027 (NAFT.27), a political think-tank supporting the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has expressed condolences over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a joint statement issued in Abuja on Monday, July 14, 2025, three prominent members of the group—Senator Babangida Hussaini, Senator Ned Nwoko, and Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim (MFR)—described Buhari as a disciplined leader whose legacy would be remembered for his resilience and integrity.

Buhari died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in London following a brief illness. His death has drawn tributes from across Nigeria’s political spectrum.

The statement noted that Buhari, who was also a retired Major-General and former military head of state, maintained a reputation for uprightness throughout his time in public service.

According to Senator Hussaini, who represents Jigawa North Senatorial District, Buhari “abhorred anything that would affect or influence his integrity in both public and private life.”

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, described the late president as “a man of discipline” who “showed positive behaviour and straight-forwardness,” both in governance and in his personal conduct.

Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim added that Buhari’s passing would be felt beyond political circles. “Nigerians will miss his peculiar sense of humour,” he said, noting that despite his military background, Buhari often displayed warmth not commonly associated with retired senior officers. “He was a good man who did the best he could to govern a complex country like Nigeria.”

The three APC lawmakers described Buhari’s death as “untimely,” stating that the former president passed away at a moment when his experience and counsel were still relevant to both the ruling party and the nation.

They commended President Tinubu’s decision to declare Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in Buhari’s honour, and noted his service during the Nigerian Civil War as a young officer in the Armoured Corps. “He played an active role in efforts to maintain the unity and peace of Nigeria,” they said.

The group extended their condolences to Buhari’s widow, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, urging her to bear the loss with strength and to find solace in the belief that her husband had returned to his creator.

The statement was signed by the three Board of Trustees members of NAFT.27: Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim (National Convener), Senator Babangida Hussaini (Deputy National Convener, North), and Senator Ned Nwoko (Deputy National Convener, South).
