The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF), Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, has called on young Nigerian surveyors to rise to the demands of modern professional practice by continuously acquiring knowledge and undergoing training, noting that many Nigerians are already making notable contributions internationally.
Adebomehin gave this charge while receiving members of the Young Surveyors Network (YSN), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) branch, at his office in Abuja.
“We have had three, four, five of our staff making real impact in the United States, Australia, and other countries,” he said.
He encouraged young surveyors to venture abroad to teach and explore the profession, adding that they should equip themselves with new surveying technologies and expert software.
“When going abroad, the client or employer already believes you have the requisite qualifications to work,” he stated.
Also speaking at the event, the Head of Hydrography, Surv. Robert Coker, advised the young professionals to adopt a business mindset. He cautioned against exposing the core secrets of the profession to outsiders, noting that such disclosures may undermine the relevance of the profession.
Presenting the mission and objectives of the group, Chairman of YSN, Surv. Izuegbu Uju, said the visit was focused on capacity building, strengthening mentorship, and enhancing knowledge acquisition.
“We came visiting because the Office of the Surveyor General is in charge of mapping and surveying in Nigeria. We hope that this visit will help us assess the physical infrastructure of the office and build the capacity of young surveyors to prevent the extinction of the profession,” she explained.
She added that the delegation sought to tap from the wealth of experience available at the office to better acquaint themselves with the profession’s operational modalities.
The Secretary of the group, Surv. Oluwaseun Sherif Akinpelu, thanked the SGOF for the warm reception and ongoing support for the YSN.
“We are hopeful that the technical discussions will be fruitful. We aspire to follow in your footsteps, and we are grateful for the conducive environment provided for us,” he said.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Angela Anyakora expressed appreciation to the Surveyor General and his management team for sharing their knowledge and experiences. She promised that the young surveyors would apply the lessons learned.
