Kano gov approves N3b for renovation of 13 abandoned schools

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved N3 billion for the renovation of 13 public boarding schools across the state.

The schools, many of which are located in rural communities, were reportedly shut during the administration of his predecessor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor’s Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam, said the renovation followed years of neglect that had left the infrastructure in a dilapidated state.

He added that the state government is committed to repositioning the education sector and restoring access to learning in underserved areas.

“The renovation became necessary due to the dilapidated state of infrastructure in the affected schools, which led to their closure under the previous administration,” Adam said.

The schools earmarked for renovation include Government Girls Secondary Schools in Unguwar Gyartai, Gezawa, Sumaila, Kwa, Albasu, Madobi, Yar Gaya, Jogana, and Danzabuwa; Unity College Karaye; Government Girls Unity School Kachako; Government Girls Secondary School Jambaki; and Government College Tudun Wada.

According to Adam, the governor is especially concerned about rural education, and the effort to revamp these schools reflects a broader policy to improve access and equity across the state’s educational system.

“The decision to revamp these schools reflects the administration’s determination to prioritize education as a foundation for long-term development,” he said.

This latest move follows earlier steps by Governor Yusuf to improve educational access. In June, the state approved the payment of registration fees for 3,526 students in community and voluntary schools sitting for the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) and National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) exams.

Earlier in the year, the government also covered NECO fees for 111,316 students in public schools across the state.
