Echifilms’ Richard Okpara Pushes for Cultural Impact Through Storytelling and Digital Content. Running a film production company while taking on lead acting roles may sound ambitious, but for Richard Amaechi Okpara, it’s simply part of the job. The actor and filmmaker, who heads Echifilms as Chief Executive Officer, is gradually building a name in the country’s competitive movie industry — one story at a time.
“Being a business owner and an actor is very challenging, especially when you’re the lead actor on a movie set, but thank God for my team and most especially my personal assistant for always supporting me and making sure everything is put together,” Okpara said.
Echifilms, based in Lagos, has been responsible for a string of titles, including Lockdown, Tori Owo, Escapade, and the series CityLife. The company also produces short-form and reality content aimed at online audiences, such as Instagram Slay Queen, Gold Digger Prank, and the recently introduced Honest Reality.
According to Okpara, the goal isn’t just to shoot films it’s to create work that reflects the realities of the society and provokes conversations.
“At Echifilms, we are intentional about relevance,” he said. “We pick stories that speak to people’s everyday lives from urban struggles to emotional journeys while maintaining strong production values.”
He listed authenticity, emotional connection, and innovation as core pillars of the Echifilms brand, noting that every project is approached with an eye for both substance and style.
While many producers still rely heavily on traditional platforms, Okpara believes the future lies online. “Digital platforms like YouTube have changed the game. They allow us to connect with a wider audience, and they offer the flexibility to experiment with formats.”
One of those experiments is Honest Reality, a dating-themed reality show that reconnects individuals who lost interest after a first date. For Okpara, the show is not just entertainment but an attempt to reflect modern relationship dynamics among young Nigerians.
Looking ahead, Echifilms plans to explore new genres and collaborate with both local and international talent. The company is also eyeing newer production techniques, including drone cinematography and virtual sets.
“As the CEO of Echifilms, I believe that storytelling has the power to shape culture, inspire change, and bring people together. Our goal is to harness this power to create a positive impact on our audience and the wider community,” Okpara said.
