Ex-Kwara governor’s trial over alleged N5.78billion fraud resumes

The trial of a former Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, who is on trial over the alleged misappropriation of funds to the tune of N5.78 billion meant for the payment of teachers, has resumed today.

Ahmed was accused of conspiring with his finance commissioner, Alhaji Ademola Banu, to embezzle funds meant for payment of salaries of teachers working with the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, UBEC, and money meant to provide security and other infrastructural facilities for the people of the State.

The duo were arraigned on October 21, 2024, by the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The former governor and former finance commissioner pleaded guilty to the charges and were admitted to bail; the case was adjourned for trial.

Their trial, however, resumed in Ilorin on Tuesday. The EFCC, in a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, disclosed that the court proceedings are expected to continue with the testimony of the former Accountant General of Kwara State, Alhaji Suleiman Oluwadare Ishola, who is one of the prosecution’s key witnesses in the case.
