In a powerful move to support farmers and enhance food production, Senator Babangida Hussain of Jigawa Northwest Senatorial District has donated 12,000 bags of fertiliser to farmers across his constituency, just as the rainy season enters its critical phase.
The fertiliser distribution, officially flagged off in Sule-Tankarkar, is seen as a strategic intervention aimed at boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and empowering grassroots farmers.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, Senator Hussain said the initiative was part of his broader plan to support rural development and alleviate the burden of high farm input costs.
“This fertiliser is being given out completely free to support our farmers during the rainy season,” he said. “Fertiliser is vital for high yields, and this intervention will help farmers cultivate more and feed more.”
Each of the 12 local government areas in the senatorial district is set to receive one truckload of 50kg fertiliser bags, with distribution carried out down to the polling unit level.
According to the senator, the primary beneficiaries will be members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and registered farmers’ associations—eight more truckloads have been allocated specifically to organised farmers’ groups.
To ensure smooth logistics, Senator Hussain also announced the disbursement of ₦500,000 to each local government council to facilitate the transportation of the fertiliser to rural distribution centres.
The senator urged local officials and distribution committees to uphold transparency and fairness in delivering the support to genuine farmers.
“This is not just a political gesture,” he said. “It’s about securing the future of our food system and empowering those who work the land.”
The Managing Director of the North West Development Commission, Professor Abdullah I. Shehu Ma’aji, praised the initiative, linking it to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Senator Hussain’s gesture reflects the core of President Tinubu’s vision: fighting poverty, ensuring food security, and creating jobs,” Professor Ma’aji stated. “We will continue to partner with leaders who deliver on the ground.”
Chairman of Sule-Tankarkar LGA, Hon. Tasiu Adamu, who spoke on behalf of the 12 council chairmen, commended the senator’s generosity and pledged to ensure proper distribution.
“We will make sure the fertiliser reaches the right people—our farmers and committed party members,” he said.
The donation is expected to improve yields, lower input costs, and energise local farming communities at a time when global and domestic pressures are threatening food systems.
With this latest intervention, Senator Hussain is reinforcing his position not just as a lawmaker but as a frontline advocate for rural prosperity and agricultural transformation.
