Divergent views trail deployment of CCTV cameras on Lagos roads

LASG clarifies use of devices on Third Mainland Bridge
Divergent views have emerged regarding the deployment of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) cameras on strategic routes in Lagos State, meant to enhance traffic management and improve commuting.

Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had recently announced the deployment of the ITS cameras to integrate advanced technologies into transportation management.

Osiyemi said that the system was not designed to be punitive but to encourage responsible driving behaviour and reduce accidents.

However, some motorists said the N50,000 fine for speed violation was punitive, especially in a city where the minimum wage is N70,000.

They complained about the speed limits on these routes and the fines imposed by the state authorities.

This came after the Founder of The Plug, Abiodun Osikoya, shared a speed limit violation fine ticket in his X handle, alleging his vehicle was captured on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Residents also raised concerns about the lack of infrastructure, speed limit signs and advocacy programme for road users.

They further argued that the speed limit was a ploy to extort motorists.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation has refuted Osikoya’s claim, stating that the violation occurred in the Alapere area.

It stated that the camera on the Third Mainland Bridge has not yet started working.

Residents also raised concerns about the lack of infrastructure, speed limit signs and education for road users.
