Ogun State Government has officially dismissed reports suggesting that the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), located in Ijagun, has been renamed after the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.

In a statement released Thursday by the Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Kayode Akinmade, the government clarified that “no change has been made to the name of Tai Solarin University of Education.”
The clarification follows widespread speculation that the university had been rebranded to honour the revered monarch.

The government stated that the existing Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology, located in Omu, already serves as a tribute to the late Awujale.
The institution, formerly Tai Solarin College of Education, was relocated to Omu and renamed in 2022 under Governor Abiodun’s administration.

Tracing the university’s background, the statement recalled that the Ogun State College of Education was established in 1977.

It was renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994, and again reconstituted as Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005.
The transition generated controversy over its authority to award both Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and degree programmes, prompting scrutiny by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“In light of the NUC’s directive, the previous administration moved the college component to Omu, while Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun retained its name and status,” the statement read.

Addressing recent comments made during the 8th Fidau prayer for the late Oba Adetona, the government emphasized that Governor Abiodun did not announce a renaming of TASUED.
Instead, the event was used to reflect on existing initiatives undertaken to honour the monarch.

The statement added that Tai Solarin University of Education has since come under federal government jurisdiction, reinforcing the position that no changes have been made to its name or identity.
