Again, Senate debunks rift, affirms unity among leaders

The Senate has dismissed reports of an alleged clash between its President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, describing the claims as baseless and a misrepresentation of standard parliamentary proceedings.

This is not the first time reports of an alleged verbal exchange between the duo during an executive session have been debunked by the upper legislative chamber.

Reacting to fresh media reports suggesting that the two top lawmakers exchanged words during an executive session over the proposed yearly recess, the Senate, through its spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, said there was no altercation, but rather healthy deliberations consistent with democratic legislative practice.

In a statement issued yesterday, Adaramodu, who chairs the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, said robust debate was at the heart of parliamentary engagement, and should not be misread as conflict.

“The reports do not contain any iota of truth. What transpired was a normal, structured engagement among colleagues, guided by mutual respect and shared responsibility to the Nigerian people,” the statement read.

The Senate emphasised that debates, questions, and opposing views are fundamental instruments of legislative work, and are exercised regularly, regardless of political affiliation.

“Like parliaments around the world, our chamber thrives on open discussions, particularly when motions or bills that affect national policy are brought forward. Such engagement is a strength, not a sign of division,” Adaramodu added.

According to him, all discussions within the Senate, whether in plenary or executive session, are geared toward advancing the interests of the over 230 million Nigerians the lawmakers represent.

Dismissing any notion of discord within the chamber’s leadership, Adaramodu said the Senate remained united, focused, and committed to its legislative mandate.

“There is no crack in our ranks. Leadership remains firm, collaborative, and committed to the progress of our nation,” he added. The Senate’s response came after media reports alleging that differences over the timing of the yearly recess sparked a heated exchange between Akpabio and Bamidels.
