Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to reopen five additional entrepreneurship institutes that will admit a total of 1,400 new enrollees.
The five institutes slated for reopening are: Poultry Institute, Tukui, Makoda; Reformatory Institute in Kiru; Artisan Fisheries Institute, Magaga in Kabo; Irrigation Institute, Gwarzo; and Journalism Institute, Kano.
The centres now ready for reactivation were part of 26 entrepreneurship institutes established during the administration of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and subsequently shut down and abandoned for eight years by Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s administration.
Kano State Statistician-General and member of the steering committee on the 26 entrepreneurship institutes, Dr. Aliyu Isa, disclosed the plan during a stakeholders’ workshop on job creation held in Kaduna at the weekend.
Dr. Isa explained that the decision of Governor Yusuf to resuscitate the centres was part of his administration’s focus on human capital development as a tool for economic empowerment and poverty reduction.
The head of the Kano Bureau of Statistics maintained that the five institutes will not only equip beneficiaries with valuable skills and boost local economies, but also contribute significantly to the overall socio-economic transformation of the state.
“All preparations for the takeoff of these institutes have been finalised. Feeding arrangements, training materials, and basic infrastructure have been provided to ensure smooth operations from day one.
“The Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that beneficiaries receive not only quality training but also the necessary support services to facilitate a successful learning experience.
“The reactivation effort is part of a broader plan to revitalise the 26 entrepreneurship and vocational institutes originally established during the administration of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“These institutes were designed to equip young people and women with practical and technical skills for self-reliance, but were abandoned under the previous administration, leading to the decay of facilities and suspension of training programs.
“The five institutes slated for reopening include the Poultry Institute in Tukui, Makoda Local Government Area, which will admit 600 women who will be trained in poultry rearing.
“Others are the Reformatory Institute in Kiru, with 200 beneficiaries to be trained in sewing, welding, computer maintenance, and phone repairs; the Artisan Fisheries Institute in Magaga (Kabo LGA), with 200 participants to be trained in modern fishing techniques;
“The Irrigation Institute in Gwarzo, which will enrol 200 trainees for instruction in irrigation practices, and the Journalism Institute, which will also admit 200 participants for training in journalism,” Dr. Isa explained.
