Imo Killings: Group tasks Southeast governors on community safety

The World Igbo National Union (WINU) on Tuesday condemned the recent brutal killings of Igbo civilians at Umualaoma, Arondizuogu in Ideato North Local Government Area (LGA), Imo State, calling on governors of the southeast to take proactive measures to enhance community safety.

No fewer than 28 unarmed persons were reportedly killed last Thursday as gunmen invaded the community in the early hours and started shooting in all directions.

WINU, which lamented the development in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ifeanyi Uwakwe, stated that the violent and tragic incident, which came to public attention through a heart-wrenching video that surfaced on July 24, 2025, highlighted not only the loss of life but the increasing insecurity faced by communities in Igboland.

“We express our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heinous act and stand in solidarity with the people of Ideato. The silence of the Imo State government on this urgent matter is disheartening and unacceptable. It is imperative that government authorities issue a formal statement condemning these actions and reinforcing their commitment to the protection of lives within our communities,” the group stated.

It demanded that the Imo State government conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.

It also called on South East governors to take proactive measures to enhance community safety by deploying local vigilantes and installing security cameras in strategic locations to bolster effective policing.

Explaining that such initiatives are critical to combating the rising threat posed by terrorist invaders who are infiltrating neighbourhoods, the group further urged youth in all communities to remain vigilant and monitor the activities of non-citizens in their areas.

“Security is a collective responsibility, and we must work together to thwart any attempts by foreign invaders to undermine our safety and well-being,” the group said.
