Oyo Assembly passes council of oba bill

The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, passed the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025.

The passage followed the consideration of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, which was submitted during the plenary session presided over by its Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin.

It is worth recalling that the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters presented a report on the matter in May 2025, resolving that the chairmanship position should be rotated.

The committee, in its report, proposed that the permanent chairmanship clause in the bill be replaced with a rotational chairmanship and struck out the permanent presiding officer role initially vested in the Alaafin.

The bill generated controversies among the concerned communities and institutions, with some supporting it, while others vehemently spoke out against it.

However, the bill was passed on Tuesday.

During the plenary session, the lawmakers noted that Clause 5 of Section 28 of the Chieftaincy Law had been amended, which would enable the chairmanship and deputy chairmanship to be rotated among the Alaafin, the Soun of Ogbomoso, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

The House, in its deliberation, agreed to pass the bill to implement the amendment aimed at improving traditional leadership skills in the state.
