Climate Council: AGESI welcomes Majekodunmi’s appointment as DG, praises predecessor

The African Green and Sustainability Institute (AGESI) has expressed support for the appointment of Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the new Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), while also acknowledging the contributions of her predecessor, Nkiruka Madueke.

In a statement issued Friday and signed by AGESI Executive Director Eugene Itua, the organisation said it welcomes the transition in leadership at the council. “In the spirit of progress, we celebrate the appointment of Mrs Omotenioye Majekodunmi as the third Director-General of the NCCC,” the statement read.

The institute described Mrs Majekodunmi as a climate finance and environmental law professional and expressed its intention to work closely with the council under her leadership. “Together, we will amplify our impact, deepen our collaborations, and build a resilient Africa that thrives in harmony with its environment,” AGESI said.

AGESI also reaffirmed its focus on climate financing, renewable energy infrastructure, and inclusive policy development in partnership with the NCCC. The organisation stated that it would continue to support efforts to empower women and youth in climate action and foster regional cooperation across Africa.

The institute also recognised the service of the outgoing Director-General. “We extend our warmest commendation to Dr. Nkiruka Madueke, whose tenure as the second Director-General of the NCCC was marked by unwavering commitment, strategic depth, and collaborative integrity,” the statement said.

According to AGESI, Ms Madueke helped strengthen the council’s institutional framework and guided it through what it described as “critical moments of growth.” It also credited her with contributing to regional and multilateral climate engagement.

“As she transitions onward, we recognise her legacy as one that has strengthened the NCCC’s voice across Africa and beyond,” the institute stated.
