Group defends Tinubu’s re-election plan, faults anti-North sentiments

A socio-political pressure group, the South-West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA) 2.0, that is championing the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027, yesterday, urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as a campaign of calumny, suggesting that the North would not support the President’s second-term bid.

The group, led by former Senate Spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, also dismissed allegations from opposition parties that Tinubu has “Yorubanised” the country by appointing only individuals from the South-West into his cabinet.

The pressure group, while addressing journalists in Lagos to mark the second phase of SWAGA’s mobilisation activities, said that since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999, Tinubu remains the only leader bold enough to introduce legacy policies with the potential to transform the country economically, socially, and politically in the near future.

According to Adeyeye, “President Tinubu’s prompt removal of the corrupt, crippling and evil fuel subsidy—which fleeced the country for decades and robbed it of legacy developmental projects while enriching a few and impoverishing millions—was a courageous move. The results are already visible in increased allocations to state governments, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across the country.

“It’s important to note that every notable presidential candidate in the last election pledged to remove fuel subsidy, but we in SWAGA knew that the only man with the boldness to hit the ground running is Tinubu. We were vindicated.”

He added that Tinubu’s decision to float the naira, halt reckless currency printing, and end the controversial “ways and means” borrowing has helped to stabilise the naira, as well as encourage greater inflow of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by boosting investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

Adeyeye also praised Tinubu for introducing a legacy student loan scheme through the establishment of NELFUND, which he said now provides students with yearly tuition and monthly upkeep allowances.

He, however, dismissed the notion that the North would collectively oppose Tinubu in 2027, stating: “There is no monolithic North. Statistics from thorough research show that no governor among the 36 states is against the President. No credible northern leader today is speaking ill of him. The few who are complaining are desperate power-seekers attempting to stir ethnic sentiments, which will not succeed.”

Adeyeye said the group firmly believes that if the Tinubu-led administration could have achieved so much in just two years, Nigerians should expect even greater strides in the next four years—and ultimately, exponential national development and growth under eight years of Tinubu’s visionary and courageous leadership.”
